Garassino, The Refined Classic Style Of Barbaresco

Reading time in

Garassino vigneto

On the far north of the town of Treiso, in the area of Garassino, there are Nebbiolo vineyards which give rise to the homonymous Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MGA), from which Tenuta Carretta obtains the Barbaresco Garassino DOCG.

We are in eastern Langhe, close to the Tanaro River, about 5 km east of Alba on the route traced by the SP3 Provincial Road which, passing through Altavilla and along a wonderful panoramic route, leads us to the heart of the Barbaresco denomination. About 1,500 hectares of vineyards, 700 of which are planted with Nebbiolo, are divided among four municipalities: Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso and the hamlet of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, in the district of Alba.

Looking at the map of Treiso, the Garassino vineyards are located on the north-western borders, near Pertinace, along the beautiful hilly ridge of Nervo, which connects the Bricco di Neive, Nervo and Rizzi MGAs and ends in Garassino, whose shape resembles a wedge with the tip facing north.

The ridge on which the Garassino vineyards rest divides it into two sides, the first one has a western exposure and is lined by hazel groves and the Cherasca stream, which draws the Pertinace valley and then flows into the Tanaro; the second is directed towards the East, overlooking a grove of the valley. On the crest of the hill, with a 360 degree view of the vineyards, stands Villa Garassino, recently renovated and transformed into a country hotel with a bistro managed by Michelin star chef Fulvio Siccardi.

THE VINEYARD OF TENUTA CARRETTA

Tenuta Carretta is the only one to vinify the Garassino MGA, making it a monopòle of the winery.

There are 3.70 hectares of Nebbiolo vineyards, with vine rows occupying both sides of the hilly ridge and enjoying excellent sunshine for almost the entire day. The soil, of ancient origin, is from the Serravallian period (which emerged from the sea between 13 and 11 million years ago), characterized by the “Formazioni di Lequio”, which present an alternation of marly and sandy layers. These are loamy soils, with a percentage of clay and limestone, completely different (referring to the charm of the Langhe…) from those in Cascina Bordino, only less than 4 km away, also located in Treiso. The soil there is of ancient origin and similar to the one found in Serralunga d’Alba, characterized by the “Marne di Sant’Agata fossili”, rich in fine sediments, silt and clay but with lesser presence of sand.

Garassino yields wines boasting floral hints, grace and elegance; labels that show complexity rather than vigour, presenting a “refined and balanced classic style” rather than power.
